Arestin® Treatment
in Alpharetta, GA

Gum disease can cause swollen, tender, or bleeding gums and may eventually damage the bone supporting your teeth. At Alpharetta Dental Care, we may recommend Arestin® as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to help manage certain types of gum disease and protect your oral health.

What Is Arestin®?

Arestin® is a prescription antibiotic treatment used with scaling and root planing, also called a deep dental cleaning. It contains minocycline, an antibiotic that helps reduce the bacteria associated with periodontal disease.

Arestin® comes in tiny powder-like microspheres. After cleaning your teeth and removing harmful buildup, our dental team places the medication directly into the infected gum pockets around your teeth. This allows treatment to focus on the areas where gum disease is active.

Arestin® is intended for adults with periodontitis, a more advanced form of gum disease. The FDA approves it for use as an addition to scaling and root planing to help reduce the depth of periodontal pockets. FDA prescribing information

How Does Arestin® Work?

Periodontal disease can cause spaces, or pockets, to form between your teeth and gums. These pockets can collect bacteria that are difficult to reach with regular brushing and flossing.

Arestin® works by:

  • Delivering an antibiotic directly into affected gum pockets
  • Helping reduce bacteria below the gumline
  • Supporting the results of a deep dental cleaning
  • Gradually releasing medication in the treated area

The microspheres dissolve over time, so the medication can continue working after your appointment. Arestin® does not replace brushing, flossing, regular dental visits, or professional cleanings. Instead, it is used as part of a larger plan to control gum disease.

Why We Recommend Arestin®

At Alpharetta Dental Care, we recommend treatment based on your individual oral health needs. Arestin® may be appropriate when gum disease has created deeper pockets or when certain areas need additional antibacterial support after a deep cleaning.

We may recommend Arestin® because it:

  • Treats bacteria in hard-to-reach areas
  • Works directly where it is placed
  • Can be used along with scaling and root planing
  • May help reduce periodontal pocket depth
  • Supports a complete approach to managing gum disease

Our team will explain what to expect and answer your questions before treatment. We’ll also provide instructions for caring for your teeth and gums afterward. Following your recommended home-care routine and returning for periodontal maintenance visits are important parts of protecting your results.
