What Is OralID?
OralID is a handheld device that uses blue-light fluorescence technology to help dentists examine the soft tissues inside your mouth. The device is designed to assist in viewing oral abnormalities, including areas that may require closer monitoring for precancerous or cancerous changes. It does not diagnose oral cancer, but it can provide valuable information alongside a standard visual and manual examination.
OralID may be used to examine areas such as your:

How OralID Works
Your OralID screening typically takes place as part of your regular dental examination:
- Your dentist or hygienist first checks your mouth, neck, tongue, gums, and other soft tissues using standard examination techniques.
- The room lighting may be reduced slightly so the blue light can be used effectively.
- Your dental professional gently moves the OralID device around the inside of your mouth.
- The blue light helps highlight differences in the appearance of oral tissues. Any area that looks unusual may be documented, monitored, or evaluated further.
- Your Alpharetta Dental Care provider discusses the findings with you and explains any recommended next steps.
A dark or unusual area does not automatically mean cancer. Irritation, inflammation, injury, or other harmless conditions can also affect how tissue appears. If we notice an area that concerns us, we will explain what we see and recommend appropriate follow-up.

What a Dark Spot Does and Doesn’t Mean
OralID is a screening aid, not a diagnosis. Plenty of ordinary things — a healing sore, a spot of irritation, or simply your normal anatomy — can appear dark under the light. It doesn't mean cancer. It does tell us where to examine more carefully. If we find something we want to watch, we'll usually recheck it after a short healing period. If it's still there, we'll refer you for a biopsy, which is the only way to make an actual diagnosis. Along the way, we'll explain every step clearly and answer any of your questions or concerns.
