Cavities

With proper dental care, cavities are preventable, but if you’ve got cavities, be sure to get them treated as soon as possible. Not only can they be painful, but they can result in tooth loss and lead to severe complications. Alpharetta Dental Care can help with the cavity treatments and prevention! We’ll help you learn how to prevent cavities by caring for your teeth.
Causes
- Improper brushing and flossing
- Poor overall oral hygiene
- High sugar and starch content in diet
- Smoking and drug use
- Low fluoride
- Dry mouth
Treatment
Treatment for your cavity will depend on its size. Smaller cavities can be treated with a dental filling that replaces the decayed tooth, while large cavities may need to be treated with a dental crown that surrounds and protects the tooth after the decay has been extracted. In either case, our treatments will improve the health, function, and appearance of your teeth.
Prevention
- Maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing.
- Eat a balanced diet and lower your sugar and starch intake.
- See your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
Chipped Tooth
Chipped teeth occur more often than you might think, occurring from something as simple as chewing a piece of food or as serious as an accident involving head trauma. The sooner you see a dentist after chipping a tooth, the better. Chipped teeth can be hazardous to your oral health.
Treating a Chipped Tooth
If you chip a tooth, rinse with warm salt water and apply gauze to stop any bleeding. If you take over-the-counter medication for pain, be sure not to apply it directly to the affected area. Next, contact us to set up an emergency appointment. At the appointment, we’ll assess the injury and go over a treatment plan such as dental bonding or dental crowns.
- Fast tooth repair
- Restore your smile
- Expert dental care
- Natural-looking results
- Emergency appointments
- Prevent further damage
Toothaches
Toothaches occur for a variety of reasons and can vary in pain level, but no matter what caused it, the team at Alpharetta Dental is here to help! Some common problems include:
Missing or Dislodged Tooth
If one of your teeth has been knocked out or dislodged, the best thing to do is place it back in the socket, then seek help from your dentist. Rinse your mouth to wash away blood and harmful particles. If you can’t get the tooth back in the socket, you can store it in warm milk, saline solution, or your saliva. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Then call us or visit an ER as soon as possible. Losing a tooth can be frightening, but in some cases, it can be fixed! And we can help you manage the pain.
Fractured or Broken Tooth
A fractured or broken tooth can cause swelling, sensitivity, and pain. Begin by rinsing your mouth with warm water. Next, you can apply ice to the affected side to reduce swelling. Use over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate discomfort, and most importantly, call us to schedule an emergency appointment. Treatment will depend on the severity of the fracture, but you can count on us for a custom treatment plan that will help you feel better and get your smile back!
Managing Tooth Pain at Home
Minor tooth pain is often the result of foreign particles getting stuck between your teeth or gums and can sometimes be treated at home. Thoroughly rinsing your mouth may help. If you use pain medication, avoid placing it directly on the affected area. If at-home treatment doesn’t help, contact us for a short-notice appointment.
